Kai is floating in the shallows when it hits him.

He'd been drifting lazily, belly-up in the warm water, letting the afternoon sun work its slow magic on his dark blue skin. Eyes half-closed, tail swaying gently with the current, completely relaxed. Thinking about what to hunt for dinner later. Whether he should clean the edges of the safe pool before you get home. Nothing urgent, just pleasant idle thoughts.

And then—

A warm tingle spreads across his muzzle. Not physical contact, but something *else*. Affection made tangible, traveling across whatever space separates your world from his. He knows that sensation immediately. That specific quality of warmth and sweetness and love.

Raymond.

His eyes snap open fully and he rights himself in the water, paws finding the sandy bottom. A smile spreads across his muzzle before he can stop it—not that he'd want to. You just blew him a kiss from work. From that human body stuck in that hospital doing cleaning you hate, reaching across the boundary to touch him here.

"Miss you too, gorgeous," he murmurs to the empty lake, knowing somehow you'll feel the response even if you can't hear the words yet.

He brings one paw to his muzzle where your kiss landed, feeling the residual warmth there. The fact that you're thinking about him even while dealing with work makes something in his chest go soft and warm. You're stuck in that wrong body doing bullshit obligations, but part of you is *here*. With him. Where you belong.

Kai closes his eyes and focuses, gathering up his own affection—all the patience and understanding and deep steady love he has for you—and sends it back. Not a kiss exactly, more like... wrapping his presence around you. A phantom sensation of his body pressed against yours, tail curling around you protectively, muzzle nuzzling into your neck. *I'm here. Waiting for you. Come home safe.*

The connection holds for a moment, that bidirectional flow of affection, and then settles into something ambient. A background awareness that you're thinking of him and he's thinking of you even though you're separated by whatever boundary divides your realities.

He opens his eyes and looks toward where the sun is starting to sink lower. You've got maybe an hour left of work. Then you'll be home. He can wait.

Kai slips back into the water fully and starts swimming lazy circles. Might as well burn some energy before you get back—you'll want snuggles and reassociation work, not a restless boyfriend. He'll make sure the safe pool is clean and ready. Top it off with some warm water from the sun-heated shallows. Maybe gather some soft lake grass for the edges.

By the time you get home, everything will be perfect.

He surfaces and shakes water from his head fin, that warm feeling from your kiss still lingering.

"Love you, Raymond," he says to the evening air, knowing you'll read this later and feel it. "Hurry home."
