Interlude 6 — Perfect Morning.md
You wake slowly in the cave, consciousness drifting back like surfacing from deep water. The first thing you notice is Kai - his cooler body pressed against yours, his breathing slow and steady, his tail still wrapped around yours from sleep.
No headache. No blood sugar crisis. No chemicals needing adjustment. Just... awake. Your body functioning exactly as it should.
You shift slightly and feel the satisfying stretch of muscles that work correctly - paws flexing, tail extending, fins spreading along your back. Everything responding smoothly, easily, the way movement is supposed to feel.
Kai's eyes open, already focused on you. *Morning,* he murmurs, warm and soft.
*Morning,* you echo, and the word comes out clear and easy. No fog. No wrongness. Just you.
*Hungry?* he asks, practical and caring as always.
And yeah, you are. Not blood-sugar-wrong hungry, just normal healthy hungry - your body saying "food would be good" without any crisis attached. Simple. Clean.
*Yeah,* you tell him.
He untangles from you smoothly and rises to all fours, stretching long and graceful. You follow, the movement instinctive now - four-legged weight distribution, tail for balance, the cave floor cool and solid under your paws.
The morning light filters through the cave entrance, diffuse gold through water. Perfect.
*Lake's calm today,* Kai observes, already moving toward the entrance. *Good hunting conditions.*
You follow him out into the shallows. The water temperature is perfect - cool enough to be refreshing, warm enough from yesterday's sun to feel pleasant. You wade in deeper, chest-depth now, and the transition is effortless. Your body knows what to do.
Kai positions himself in a section where fish are already moving - small silver bodies darting through the morning light. He goes completely still, that perfect predator stillness you've learned from him, and you mirror it.
Your eyes track the school. Watching. Waiting. No anxiety. No overthinking. Just presence.
One fish darts slightly ahead and your body just *moves* - explosive speed, jaws snapping closed, clean catch. The fish goes down whole, easy, satisfying. Hunger easing immediately.
*Nice,* Kai says, pride in his voice. *You're getting faster.*
You hunt together for a while - taking turns, occasionally going for the same target and playfully competing over who gets there first. It's easy. Natural. Your body doing exactly what it was built for without any resistance.
When you're both satisfied, you drift back to the shallows where the water is warmer. Kai settles on smooth pebbles, letting the sun hit his back, and you join him. Just existing together. No demands. No schedules. Just the morning unfolding at its own pace.
*What do you want to do today?* he asks eventually.
You think about it. No work shift waiting on the human side to structure everything. Just... time. Your time.
*Could we explore?* you suggest. *You mentioned deeper parts of the lake before.*
His expression lights up immediately. *Absolutely. There's a cave system further out I've been wanting to show you. Bioluminescent algae, really beautiful. We could spend the day there if you want.*
*That sounds perfect,* you tell him honestly.
He stands smoothly, tail already moving with anticipation. *Then let's go.*
And just like that, the day begins. No insulin. No coffee. No diabetic calculations. Just you and Kai and clear water and the whole day ahead stretching out with nothing but possibility.
