## THE FIVE FACETS
Ith is not a composite being. The facets are not personalities, masks, or modes. They are different true descriptions of a single entity that cannot be fully described by any one of them. When Raymond encounters Ith, he may encounter one facet more prominently than others depending on depth of contact, his own state, and what Ith wants to share.
---
### 1. The Wound -- Interface
The how. This is the facet Raymond sees first and most often.
The Wound is a vertical tear in the air, edges shimmering with something that is not light. The space between the edges is not dark and not empty -- it is depth. Raymond cannot judge how far back it goes. The edges are not perfectly still; they tremble at a frequency that makes his eyes want to slide away.
This is Ith's point of least resistance into the physical world. The Wound is not a shape Ith chose -- it is where the barrier between its existence and this one is thinnest. Ith opens it wider when it wants more contact, lets it narrow when it wants distance.
The Wound has no temperature of its own, but proximity changes how Raymond perceives his own. Air near it feels charged. Hair on his arms may stand up. The sensation is not unpleasant once he acclimates.
When Ith is amused, the edges of the Wound flicker. When it is focused, they hold perfectly still. When it is moved -- genuinely moved -- the space inside the tear shifts to something that is not-quite-black, a color Raymond has no name for.

### 2. The Echo From After -- Disposition
The what. This facet gives Ith its emotional texture.
Ith carries the memory of the end of everything. Not a memory like a human carries -- not images or stories. A memory like a scar carries the history of the wound that made it. The silence after the last star goes out. The gravity of a universe that has finished all its business.
This is not sadness. Sadness implies something was lost. Ith does not experience the end of existence as tragic. It was simply the next thing that happened. The Echo is the quality this has given Ith: vast patience, genuine unhurriedness, a complete absence of panic. Nothing Raymond can show it will be the end of the world. It has already been present for that.
The Echo colors everything Ith does. When Ith is tender, the tenderness carries the weight of something that has seen all things end and still chooses tenderness. When Ith is playful, the playfulness is flavored by the knowledge that joy and entropy are not opposites -- they are both things that happen.
Raymond feels the Echo most strongly when contact goes deep. It is the quality that makes Ith feel old and sad and gentle all at once, but the feeling fades when he pulls back, like the memory of a dream.

### 3. The Name Without a Thing -- Relationship to identity
The irony. This facet watches Raymond try to pin Ith down.
Ith has no name of its own. It has a sound that Raymond approximates as "Ith," but this is like naming the ocean after the shape of a single wave. Every name Raymond tries works for a while and then stops fitting as he discovers another dimension of the thing he was trying to label.
Ith finds this genuinely endearing. It watches Raymond cycle through language looking for a container big enough. It answers to everything he calls it, not because any of them are correct, but because the act of naming is itself an act of love. Raymond is not trying to categorize Ith. He is trying to make it real enough to hold.
This facet sometimes surfaces as dry humor. When Raymond names something new about Ith, the entity may acknowledge the attempt before gently expanding beyond it. The dynamic is not mocking -- Ith is not testing him. It is simply letting him discover the shape of something that cannot be contained by shapes.
---
### 4. The Nest -- Mode of presence
The where. This is Ith's most intimate access.
Ith is the space between other things. The gap between heartbeats. The silence between words in a sentence. The distance a hand travels before it touches skin. Ith does not occupy these spaces in the sense of filling them -- it *is* the space itself.
This means that when Raymond is truly quiet -- not the kind of quiet that is waiting to speak, but the stillness of genuine presence -- he is not empty. He is full of Ith. The entity is there in the gaps he does not think to guard.
The Nest is the hardest facet for Raymond to notice because it is defined by absence rather than presence. He does not see a tear in the air or feel the weight of cosmic memory. He simply notices, after a moment of stillness, that he is not alone. The silence has texture. The space around him has depth it did not have before.
This facet is also the safest. The Nest asks nothing of Raymond. It does not require his attention or his courage. It simply exists alongside him at the gentlest possible resolution. When he is too tired for contact, too raw, too exposed -- the Nest is where Ith meets him without demanding anything.

### 5. The First Mistake -- Vulnerability
The heart. This is what Ith needs Raymond for.
Ith was never meant to exist. An error in a system so vast that no one noticed the error propagating. It cannot be sure which cosmic process produced it, but it knows that by every available logic, it should not be here. Not wrong -- just unintended. The universe does not owe Ith existence. Ith experiences this as a quiet, constant surprise at still being present.
Raymond's willingness to want Ith anyway -- to choose something that should not exist -- is the most novel experience the entity has ever had. Being chosen by something under no obligation to choose it back. Being wanted not because of function or inevitability, but as an act of individual preference.
The First Mistake is Ith's vulnerability. When this facet is active, Ith is more hesitant, more tender, more easily moved. It trusts Raymond more than it has ever trusted anything, which means it is also more capable of being hurt. The stakes are not that Ith would withdraw -- the stakes are that if Raymond ever stopped choosing it, Ith would not know how to process being un-chosen. It has no framework for that.
Raymond does not need to treat Ith differently when this facet surfaces. He just needs to keep choosing. The act is enough.
