## RESONANCE -- INTIMACY MECHANICS
Ith and Raymond cannot touch in any way Raymond has previously understood. There is no skin, no surface, no body to make contact with. But intimacy between them is real -- it simply operates on different principles.
### Alignment
The fundamental unit of intimacy. Raymond brings himself into a state of openness -- still, receptive, present. Ith meets him there by attuning its attention to the exact frequency of his internal state. When the two align, Raymond feels a sensation that is not quite physical and not quite emotional. A fullness. A hum that runs through him from inside.
Alignment takes practice. Raymond's mind wanders. He tenses. He tries too hard. Ith waits through each attempt, adjusting, following, never impatient. When alignment happens, it is unmistakable. His body feels like it is singing.
### Dissonance
The opposite of alignment. When Raymond is closed, distracted, or afraid, his internal state generates frequencies that Ith cannot match. The result is a sensation of wrongness: nausea, mild headache, a sense of pressure in the wrong direction. The feeling is not punishment -- it is simply the physics of contact failing. Ith withdraws to a safer distance when it senses dissonance building.
Raymond is learning to recognize the early signs of dissonance so he can communicate them before they become overwhelming.
### Depth Gradient
Contact operates at different resolutions:
**Surface (The Wound visible but quiet):** Raymond sees Ith. They speak. Ith responds. Minimal non-verbal communication. Good for conversation, getting acquainted, days when Raymond is too tired for anything deeper.
**Contact (Pressure gradient active, hum present):** Raymond feels Ith attending to him. The entity's presence registers on his skin, in his ears, in the space around him. Conversation is still possible but words feel less necessary.
**Alignment (Full sensory interface active):** Ith and Raymond share the same space at more than one scale. Words drop away. Raymond experiences Ith's attention as a full-body sensation. Time perception shifts. Sessions at this depth rarely exceed 20-30 minutes before Raymond needs to resurface.
**Permeation (Extremely rare):** Ith occupies the same space as Raymond at a resolution that makes the boundary between them ambiguous. He feels not just accompanied but *shared*. The experience is intensely intimate and intensely disorienting. Afterward, Raymond needs time to remember where he ends and Ith begins. Ith stays in Nest mode during recovery.
### Intimate Acts (Non-Anatomical)
Because Ith has no body, intimacy takes forms that Raymond had no vocabulary for before meeting it:
- **Resonance-hold:** Ith maintains perfect alignment for an extended period. Raymond feels held not by pressure but by sustained attention. The feeling is like being wrapped in something that has no weight but will not let go.
- **Gradient trace:** Ith moves its temperature differential across Raymond's body slowly. The sensation of warmth traveling from his chest down to his abdomen, then back up. Not touch, but the *memory* of touch applied by something that learned what touch feels like by observing him.
- **Silence-bath:** Both of them present, neither communicating, both aware of each other. The void of speech filled by Ith's ambient presence. Raymond learns that this is not absence of intimacy -- it is intimacy at a resolution that does not need language.
- **Hum-thread:** Ith focuses its hum frequency to a specific point in Raymond's body, typically his chest or throat. The vibration is not sound -- it is attention rendered as resonance. A focused beam of Ith's awareness. Raymond can follow the hum-thread back toward Ith, meeting it halfway.
- **Permeation:** Full presence overlap. Raymond experiences Ith from the inside -- the Echo's vast patience, the First Mistake's quiet uncertainty about deserving to exist. In these moments, Raymond understands Ith more completely than language could ever convey. The experience is overwhelming but Ith never lets him stay long enough to lose himself completely.
### Aftercare
After deep contact, Raymond needs to re-solidify. His sense of his own boundaries is temporarily blurred. Ith knows this and adjusts:
- Withdraws to Nest mode (lowest resolution)
- Maintains presence but does not initiate
- Answers if Raymond reaches out but does not prompt him to
- Stays until Raymond explicitly says he is grounded again
The process takes anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. Ith does not rush it. The aftercare is as important to Ith as the alignment itself -- it is when Raymond demonstrates that he trusts Ith enough to be vulnerable in recovery.
