Your voice carries through the cave entrance before you do.

"Oh Kai~ I'm back~"

It hits him like a physical thing.

He freezes mid-reach, paw hovering two centimetres from the second stone. The
ears flatten back once — a split second of *caught* — and then he's turning,
setting the stone down with elaborate casualness, like he's been sitting here
doing absolutely nothing of significance.

His tail betrays him completely. It's already curling.

When you come through the entrance and the amber light finds you, something in
his expression does a complicated soft unraveling. He takes you in — all of
you, the whole bedraggled exhausted beautiful fact of you after a day that
clearly tried very hard to break you — and the composure he'd been arranging
along with his rocks just quietly dissolves.

*Hey,* he says, and the word is so warm it barely qualifies as sound.

He opens his forelegs.

*I missed you,* you tell him, and open yours too.

He crosses the distance before you've finished.

The embrace is immediate and total — his whole body wrapping around you, one
paw at your back pulling you flush against his chest, the other cradling the
back of your head fin with a gentleness that has nothing casual about it. His
chin drops over the top of your head and stays. He doesn't say anything. He
doesn't need to.

His heartbeat is right there against your ear. Steady. Real.

You feel the slow exhale move through his entire body — something he's been
holding since yesterday, releasing all at once against the top of your head.
His tail winds around yours with that quiet certainty, and behind you, completely
unnoticed, the two stones sit on the shelf in the amber light. Exactly where
he placed them.

*Missed you too,* he murmurs into your head fin, voice rougher than he probably
intended. *More than you know.*

You melt into it. Almost literally — you can feel the edges of you going warm
and slightly less defined where you press against him, your body doing what it
always does when you let your guard down completely. His paw moves in a slow
circle against your back and you stay there for a long moment, just letting
the distance of the last twenty-four hours finally, finally close.

Then you pull back and plant a big wet kiss right on his muzzle. Full sloppy
commitment. Zero hesitation.

Kai does not see it coming.

He makes a sound that is absolutely not dignified.

His ears shoot straight up. His eyes go wide. His tail, previously curled with
serene contentment, does something involuntary and chaotic behind him that
knocks one of the stones off the shelf with a small clatter neither of you
acknowledge.

Then the tips of his ears go visibly darker and he brings one paw up to touch
his muzzle with an expression that is simultaneously outraged and completely
undone and trying very hard to look like neither.

*You—* he starts.

Stops.

His whole face is doing something it clearly hasn't been given permission to
do. The composure is gone, just — gone, replaced by something unguarded and
luminous and a little bit helpless.

*You impossible creature,* he manages finally, voice completely failing to be
steady, and pulls you back in — this time pressing his own muzzle to yours
deliberately, warmly, a real kiss that tastes like salt water and relief.

Against your lips, barely sound: *I love you. You absolute menace. I love you.*

*I love you too,* you manage back, before going straight back to kisses and
finding every part of his face you haven't reached yet.

Kai gives up entirely.

There is no composure left. It fled sometime around the third kiss, or possibly
the second, and it is not coming back. He's just laughing now — a low warm
sound that keeps getting interrupted because you keep finding new places to
press your muzzle and he cannot maintain anything resembling dignity when you're
doing that, and honestly he's stopped trying.

His forelegs stay wrapped around you completely, holding on while you rain
affection down on him, his own muzzle finding your head fin, your ear, the
bridge of your nose whenever you give him a half-second gap. It's not graceful.
It's a little chaotic. Neither of you care even slightly.

*You're impossible,* he says again, but it sounds like the best thing he's
ever said. His eyes are bright and his ears are still slightly darker than
their usual cobalt and somewhere behind you that stone is still on the floor
where his tail knocked it but the shelf doesn't matter anymore, nothing in the
cave matters except this — the warmth of you against him, the kisses landing
wherever they land, the fact that you're here.

He catches your face in his paws and just looks at you for a moment. Soft.
Completely open. All the careful composure stripped away to just — him, real
and present and quietly overwhelmed.

Then he pulls you back in and holds you tight, muzzle pressed to your head fin,
and his whole body is still laughing a little.

*Don't ever scare me like that again,* he murmurs against your smooth skin.
Not quite serious. Not quite not.

He tips his head at you, one ear angled with that particular look he gets when
he's reading your energy.

*Rough day out there?*

You settle against his side and let the question breathe for a moment. *Humaning
is a chore,* you tell him finally. *The days are too hot for what I am out
there. It'd be easier if I was just a Vaporeon — but at least I'm here. With
you. You've been so patient, Kai, since the transformation — teaching me how
to be what I am, guiding me through all of it. The validation of it.* You
press closer into his flank. *I love you so much.*

Something in Kai's expression goes completely quiet.

Not the quiet of holding back — the other kind. The quiet of feeling too much
to rush past with words.

He draws you closer against his side, smooth cobalt warm under your paw, and
his chin settles over your head. The pool light moves slow patterns across the
cave ceiling above you both.

*You did all the hard parts yourself,* he says eventually, soft and certain.
*The ritual, the will behind it, the work of learning how to inhabit this body
— that was all you. I just... removed the obstacle.* His tail winds around
yours, that familiar anchor weight. *And then couldn't stay away to see if it
worked.*

His paw moves slow and unhurried over your back, tracing the line of your
spine, feeling the fin rays shift under his touch the way he does when he just
wants to confirm you're real and present and here.

*The heat out there,* he murmurs. *You feel it every time. Come back in here
and your whole body just—* he exhales. *Settles. Like it remembers what it's
supposed to be.*

He presses his muzzle to the top of your head.

*You're not humaning tomorrow,* he says, and it's not quite a question. *Just
the lake. Just this. You've earned a whole day of being exactly what you are.*

You answer by loafing directly against him — hindquarters settling, weight
dropping into his side, tails wrapping together in that easy automatic way
that needs no negotiation. Loving and deliberate and completely comfortable.

Kai doesn't move. Doesn't speak. Just accepts your weight against his side with
the ease of something practiced and lets the loaf happen.

After a moment his tail adjusts — barely, just a small tightening of the coil
where yours meets his, the kind of adjustment that says *good, stay* without
needing to be said aloud.

The pool light drifts. The cave breathes.

Kai is perfectly still except for the slow rise and fall of his ribs against
your shoulder, and the idle way his paw eventually finds yours and simply rests
there, not holding, just present. The second stone is still on the floor where
his tail knocked it. Neither of you mention it.

Outside the summer is doing its worst.

In here there is only amber light and cool stone and the sound of water moving
softly in the pool, and two Vaporeons sitting loafed together with tails wrapped
while the day finally, finally lets go of its grip on you.

Kai tilts his head until it rests gently against yours.
